Where can a teen volunteer online


To qualify, you must live in the Los Angeles area, be at least 14 years old, and in or entering the 9th or 10th grade (Fall of 9th grade is the first eligible training period and Summer after the 10th grade is the last eligible training period). Due to the number of applications received, we have a competitive screening process that includes a 5-page application, individual and group interviews (if selected), and a parent-teen orientation meeting. Volunteers are unpaid, although you may receive community service credit at school.

TEEN LINE holds 3 training sessions per year: fall, spring and summer. Teens must attend only one of these training sessions, with no absences permitted. Fall training begins in early October and ends mid-December. The Spring training begins in early February and ends mid-May. Both trainings are held from 4:30-7PM every Tuesday and Thursday and some select Saturdays from 9-1PM.

The Summer training begins in early June and ends late July. It is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-6:30PM, and most Saturdays from 9-1PM. Please see the application for dates and times of training.

If accepted into the program, all volunteers are required to get an annual health clearance including TB blood test, Flu shot, and must provide proof of various immunizations. In addition, there is a $350 non-refundable training fee. No one will be turned away based on inability to pay. Teen Line has established a scholarship fund for such circumstances. Please let us know if you would like to apply for a scholarship upon submitting your application.

The Teen Line Training Application

We have completed our Spring training selection process as of 1/10/2020. If you are interested in applying for our Summer 2020 Training group, the applications will be made available on this page in April.


Teen Line’s staff carefully screen and select approximately eighty teenagers a year for hotline and outreach training. They complete a sixty-five hour training program emphasizing specialized listening and communication techniques.

Topics discussed include crisis intervention, family life, cultural diversity, values, sexuality and gender identity, child abuse, and self-destructive and life threatening behaviors. Teen Line’s trained Listeners help callers clarify their concerns, discuss the options available, and make referrals to community resources, if needed. They respond to calls, emails and texts, every evening from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. PST.
